PRIMARY school pupils throughout Moray braved the snow, sleet and hail for the spring launch of the Moray Mile initiative.

Schools in and around Keith have signed up to the challenge, which sees pupils taking part in 15-20 minute sessions of outdoor physical activity each day. The aim is to ensure children across Moray keep fit and active.

DUDLEY Council’s chief executive is getting ready to don her trainers as she prepares to join Brierley Hill Primary School’s daily mile.

Sarah Norman will join children this morning (Thursday, April 28) as they run – or walk – their way to fitness through a regular daily mile.

It comes as part of a national initiative which has been encouraging children to get more physically active during their school day by taking part in the 15 minute challenge.

A number of schools and organisations across the borough are already taking part in the initiative, while around half of the primary schools have also expressed an interest in taking part.

Weer of geen weer, elke dag hardlopen op Britse scholen

Op ruim 700 basisscholen in Groot-Brittannië wordt elke dag hardgelopen. Naast de normale gymlessen doen de leerlingen The Daily Mile, een dagelijkse mijl. Een rondje van ruim anderhalve kilometer, weer of geen weer.

Op de Hallfield basisschool in West-Londen bevalt het de kinderen wel. De 9-jarige Mobesar zegt dat hij zich fitter en gezonder voelt sinds de school twee maanden geleden met het project begon. “Ik slaap ook beter. Ik denk omdat ik sneller moe ben.” Zijn klasgenoot Adam vertelt dat hij ook verschil ziet: “Ik was vroeger heel langzaam en ik vond sport verschrikkelijk. Nu ben ik sneller en vind ik sport leuk.”

Primary school pupils complete marathon challenge

Ahead of the London marathon a group of children from Norwich have just completed their own special Marathon.

Pupils from Trowse Primary have run a mile a day for the last 26 days as part of the schools commitment to increase their physical activity and improve their overall well being.

Amongst year 6 children in Norwich, 1 in 3 are recorded as overweight or obese. The idea behind the Daily Mile, which began in Scotland, was to improve not just the physical but social and emotional wellbeing of children.

Trowse to Timbuktu means miles of smiles as pupils complete feat

But running a total of 2,912 miles was no problem for pupils and staff from Trowse Primary School, who took the challenge one day at the time.

The school has become the first in the region to compete the Daily Mile Marathon – a scheme that started in Scotland and is fast becoming a national phenomenon.

Six of the school’s staff members and 106 pupils have each run a mile a day and competed their 26th mile yesterday to make it the distance of a marathon.

Headteacher Stuart Odell said: “After hearing about how positive the initiative has been in Scotland it was something I wanted us to try.

New playground opens at Pondhu School

PUPILS at Pondhu School have a new play area.

The official opening was carried out by Jon Cleave of Fisherman’s Friends last week when the whole school was joined by parents and friends for delicious refreshments before the ceremony.

The school choir joined Jon in singing a Seagull Shanty before the ribbon was cut by Jon, alongside the eldest and youngest children in the school.

Schools given £10k grants to fight childhood obesity

Schools in East Sussex are to receive £10,000 grants to help them defuse the “ticking time bomb” of childhood obesity. A total of 178 schools and colleges will share £2million of health improvement grants from East Sussex County Council’s public health department.
