Kids at a Liverpool school are made to run one mile three times a week in a bid to cut childhood obesity rates.

All Saints Catholic Primary School in Anfield says pupils’ fitness, motivation and behaviour has improved since the regular running sessions were introduced.

Children are required to run laps of the playground, clocking up a mile at a time.

Headteacher Jeremy Barnes said: “Anfield had one of the highest levels of childhood obesity in the country and that was the motivation behind this.

“When we heard the statistics we were alarmed and felt we needed to do more.”

On Athletics: Children in need of a running revolution before it’s too late

Source: The Irish Times

No, you won’t fool the children of the revolution. At least not into thinking a sugar tax and other political sweeteners will prevent the next generation of Irish children from becoming the fattest in Europe.

That might sound like a strange way of linking the centenary celebrations of the Easter Rising with the current health of the nation, but what else is going on this weekend?

AND ignore the Chancellor’s claim to fame – saving our kids is a job for an unassuming retired head teacher, writes Aidan Smith

Following the death of Sylvia Anderson, creator with her husband Gerry of the stilted, string-bound but almost impossibly exciting Thunderbirds, Stingray and my own favourite, now clocking up its third random mention in this column, Fireball XL5, the question has to be asked: “Who’s going to save our kids now?”

A simple and healthy idea has found its way to schools south of the border

Source: The Times (Scotland)
Date: 18-Mar-2016

It is such a simple idea that the only surprise is why it was not thought of earlier. Getting every primary school pupil to run a mile in the course of the day was the brainchild of Elaine Wyllie when she was head teacher at St Ninian’s in Stirling, where pupils routinely spend 15 minutes every day jogging around the playground. It has improved their health, their behaviour and their attitude in class.
