The Daily Mile is spreading far and wide after a school in Stirling sets the standard with running scheme to get kids active.

Children in schools from Scotland all the way to Belgium have begun running a mile a day as part of their school day, now schools in Leeds are beginning to take part in an effort to combat obesity and improve their children’s overall fitness.

The ‘Daily Mile’ fitness scheme appears to be catching on in Perthshire, with two more primary schools now confirmed as taking part in the initiative.

It comes just weeks after a Highland Perthshire councillor called for the scheme, which sees pupils run or walk a mile every day, to be rolled out across Perth and Kinross.

The Hull primary school making children run every day to improve fitness and tackle obesity

RUNNING a daily mile would be a fairly tall order for most grown adults.

But that’s exactly what a small army of west Hull pupils is trying to achieve.

Inspired by a fitness initiative that left the starting blocks at a Scottish school in Stirling three years ago, pupils at Newland St John’s Primary School are setting the pace for city youngsters.

For about three weeks, teachers have ordered their wards to down pencils in the middle of class at different times each day, and escorted them on to the playground for a five-minute dash.
