A new fitness initiative aimed at primary school children in West Cheshire and designed to improve both their health and performance in the classroom is to get an extra boost through the summer holidays.

Brio Leisure, the community interest company behind leisure and sports venues such as the Northgate Arena and Northwich Memorial Court, is offering free junior memberships at its centres through July and August to the schools in the Daily Mile pilot programme.

One in three people in parts of South and South West Wales do virtually no exercise at all, a conference has heard.

And one in five deaths in the region could be prevented if people were more active, delegates at the Promise to Move You More conference held at Swansea University heard.

The event, hosted by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University (ABMU) Health Board’s Physical Activity Alliance, discussed moves to encourage the region’s half a million people to build exercise into their everyday lives.

A NEW £13,500 running track was unveiled by little children with the help of Cherry Bear yesterday.

Pupils from all years of Stourfield Junior School, on Stourvale Road in Southbourne, got the chance to test out the new grass-topped facility in the playing fields which they can use for The Daily Mile activity.

Laura Rawson, head teacher at the school, said: “We had an amazing morning and the day went without a hitch.

Sheriff’s bid to get primary schools running

Thousands of primary pupils in Nottingham are being urged to run 100 miles over the next school year in a bid to get fit and healthy – and complete the Sheriff’s Challenge.

Children aged five to 11 will be encouraged to run a one-mile course around their school playgrounds at least twice a week to hit the 100-mile target – that’s the equivalent of running four full marathons each over the 2016/17 academic year!

Schools are being asked to sign up to the Sheriff’s Challenge, which is being organised by Nottingham City Council as part of the Opportunity Notts initiative to encourage more young people to get active and broaden their horizons.

Timmergreens pupils celebrate 46 marathons success

Staff, pupils and parents at Timmergreens Primary School in Arbroath have successfully taken up an exercise challenge.

Each class had to walk as many miles as they could while parents and the local community were invited to add to the total as well.

Having taken part in the Daily Mile for nine months, the final total was 1,206-and-a-half miles –the equivalent of 46 marathons.
