“The link between being physically active and improving mental health is clear for all to see”
Green Lane Primary School, England
At Green Lane Primary School, with 409 children, The Daily Mile has been a part of our daily routine for more than 8 years. Our Daily Mile route takes us around our lovely fields, or, if the weather isn’t kind, around the KS1 or KS2 playgrounds. We are lucky to have such an active community and the staff at Green Lane are all committed to ensuring all our children grow and foster a love of all things active. We have the usual challenges in school, but getting outside and moving is something that all our children have in common. It allows them to bond and to give themselves some time to clear their minds and recharge their batteries.
The Daily Mile is integrated into our curriculum here at Green Lane. Every staff member encourages it, and all of our pupils—from Nursery to Year 6—are Daily Milers! It’s a natural brain break that allows children to get some fresh air, have fun with friends, and release any pent-up energy. We’re lucky to have a lot of outdoor space, which we use to help our children foster a love for movement and physical activity.
The Daily Mile is for everyone, no matter where you’re from, what language you speak, or how you learn. Our 12 Year 6 Sports Leaders, who also serve as Mental Health Ambassadors, are fantastic role models for our younger pupils. These leaders run sports activities during break times and champion The Daily Mile throughout the school. They especially loved leading the way during our Daily Mile Santa Dash in December. The link between being physically active and improving mental health is clear for all to see. As staff, we truly value the positive impact The Daily Mile has on school life. We also make time to walk together once a week and encourage active sports breaks.
At Green Lane, The Daily Mile is an integral part of everyone’s timetable. The children use it as a brain break and can often be seen out on their Daily Mile route at least twice a day—come rain or shine!
Our Green Lane community is strong, and our parents and carers fully support the importance of staying active, both now and in the future. Our parents even run a weekly Friday morning running club, which provides a great opportunity for children to see positive role models in action.
The Daily Mile aligns perfectly with our ethos here at Green Lane Primary and Nursery School. We believe it’s essential for all children to be positive, hardworking, and polite, and that staying active is crucial to getting the best out of their education. There is a clear link between physical activity and performance in the classroom. Being strong both mentally and physically is so important, which is why we ensure our pupils are well-prepared for the challenges of the modern world.
