Today, The Daily Mile Foundation, supported by INEOS, and Manchester United Foundation held the first Santa Run event at Old Trafford Stadium, to promote the importance of daily physical activity.
Over 200 children from Greater Manchester’s underserved communities came together for a festive themed Daily Mile.
Gordon Banks, Global Director of The Daily Mile, says the teamwork between Manchester United Foundation echoes the synergies between both charities, breaking down barriers to physical activity, and aims to bring festive joy to children across Greater Manchester and the UK at this important time of the year.
“The Daily Mile is a wonderfully simple and impactful model that can engage all children, regardless of ability, circumstances or background,” Banks says.
“This time of year, when it often feels easier to stay indoors, we are using the Daily Mile Santa Run to highlight the importance for all of us to get moving outdoors every day. The Santa Run event puts a fun-filled, festive spin on The Daily Mile – meaning children can participate across the country at any time,” Banks continues.
John Shiels, Chief Executive Officer of Manchester United Foundation, says The Daily Mile is a great initiative, with a shared ambition of empowering young lives through physical activity.
“The Daily Mile is a wonderful initiative, and it’s a pleasure to work alongside the team to bring the Daily Mile Santa Run to Old Trafford,” Shiels says.
“As charities working in tandem, our shared ambition of empowering young lives through physical activity is perfectly demonstrated through this iteration of the Daily Mile – where young people can engage in exercise in an aspirational sporting environment, while bringing schools together in celebration at a poignant time of year.” Shiels continues.
The event runs alongside The Daily Mile’s first national festive event in schools and early years settings, to get children moving and promoting the benefits of physical activity.
Scientific research has reinforced The Daily Mile can significantly enhance children’s fitness, heighten their alertness, and boost concentration levels in class, supporting improved learning outcomes and contributing to children feeling happier.
Elaine Wyllie, Founder of The Daily Mile says the Santa Run event captures the magic of The Daily Mile.
“The Daily Mile has been successful in improving the health of so many children across the world because first and foremost it is fun! By giving their Daily Mile a festive twist today, school children across the UK will be experiencing the physical, mental, and social health benefits of being active outdoors with their friends,” Wyllie says.
The Daily Mile is a global movement, with 5 million children across the world registered to participate. It’s a simple, free, and fun model where children can run, wheel or walk around the school grounds for 15-minutes every day, at their own pace.
